Daily Mail television review excerpt

Daily Mail: 14th May 2006

Krakatoa: The Last Days, competing on the other side, was less enjoyable, not least for the subject matter, which told of the eruption of the tiny volcanic island in 1883.

Important subject matter does not guarantee great television, and after a promising start with spectacular effects, everything fell rather flat.

I am not a fan of the drama-documentary form, and despite the presence of the fabulous Rupert Penry-Jones, the drama aspects sat ill at ease alongside the factual elements - not least owing to Rupert looking very beautiful throughout the dreadful ordeal.
