| Excerpt from Sunday Telegraph Sunday Telegraph: 14th May 2006 'What about the tremors?' asked Olivia Williams in Krakatoa (last Sunday, BBC1). 'They seem to be getting worse.' They were doing that all right, and when the volcano finally blew, the noise was so loud that my television and I leaped, as one, into the air. But while the special effects were impressively earth-shattering, Krakatoa worked just as well on a human level. One scene especially stood out. When the characters were deafened by the explosion, the director, Sam Miller, cleverly dropped almost all the sound from the soundtrack to mimic their loss of hearing. All you could hear were these dim, blurry noises. With ash raining down all round, Williams and her husband (Rupert Penry-Jones), thinking they were about to die, began to kiss. It's not as if I keep a record of such things, you understand, but this was one of the best screen kisses I have ever seen: appropriate, heartfelt and moving.
