Biography
Rupert Penry-Jones was born to Angela Thorne and Peter Penry-Jones on the 22nd of September 1970 - their 3rd wedding anniversary. He grew up in West Norwood, in South London. His younger brother Laurence who has appeared in Doctors and The Bill among other things, was born in 1977.
Rupert attended Dulwich College near his home, where he discovered his passion for theatre. When he was sixteen, he joined the National Youth Theatre. After graduating from Dulwich College in 1989, Rupert attended Bristol Old Vic Theatre School but left/was kicked out after 2 years for being a "disruptive influence". Unable to get any acting jobs or an agent, he spent 18 months in Milan, Italy, working as a runway fashion model for British designer Paul Smith, before returning to England to pursue acting. After moving out of the family home, Rupert made trendy Clapham (South London) his residence, where he shared a house with his brother Laurence. Rupert, his fiancee Dervla Kirwan (Ballykissangel, 55 Degrees North), whom he met while performing in the play "Dangerous Corner" in 2001, and their daughter Florence and son Peter now share a home in Hampshire, a county South of London in South-East England. Florence was born May 1st, 2004, Peter was born April 8, 2006. Rupert previously dated Aussie pop icon Kylie Minogue for 9 months in 1999, after he performed with her in the "Tempest" in Barbados.
He puts amazing effort into all roles on TV, film and stage, which has earned him several awards including the prestigeous Ian Charleson award in 2000 to which Michael Attenborough, RSC Principal Associate Director, commented: "Rupert is one of the most exciting young actors of his generation. He possesses a wonderful ability to express complex ideas and ornate language in a seemingly effortless way that is both clear and completely contemporary. The RSC is delighted that Rupert has been given this award in recognition of his outstanding performance in Don Carlos."
Since 2004, Rupert has been playing the part of Adam Carter in the British drama series Spooks. Next he can be seen in Burn Up, an eco-thriller that was filmed mostly in Canada and addresses global warming. Later this year, Rupert will appear in the 7th (his last) series of Spooks and the 3-part miniseries Whitechapel. Currently Rupert is enjoying some well-deserved time off, spending time with his family. |
